Star Clippers to offer A year of tall ship sailing experiences, January – December 2020

The Royal Clipper in VeniceStar Clipper’s three magnificent tall ships offer the exhilaration of sailing beneath billowing sails, never far from the water, in the company of around 200 like-minded guests. Relax on the scrubbed teak deck, beneath billowing sails. Lie in the bowsprit net as the bow slices through the waves.

Climb the rigging up to 67’ (over 20 metres) for a magnificent birds eye view of the sun decks and pools, amid the sails and the rigging. JANUARY 2020 – island hopping in the Caribbean

Start the year with a sailing voyage island hopping in the Caribbean, steeped in colonial history and abounding with tales of piracy to spice up the slow pace of island life, visiting small and unspoilt white sand beaches fringed with palm trees and the gently lapping turquoise sea. FEBRUARY 2020 – Paradise found in southern Thailand
Thailand’s myriad of archipelago, marine parks, lagoons and waterways feature dramatic craggy outcrops and islets, islands blanketed in rain forests and fringed by white sand beaches, crystal clear sea-water and beautiful coral gardens. Star Clipper’s 7 night sailing from Phuket on 1st February 2020 includes the chance to visit Pha Nang Bay, immortalised by 007’s adversaries in the film `The Man with the Golden Gun’, as well as some of the clearest and most beautiful waters in Thailand, for sailing, snorkelling, fishing and relaxing. MARCH 2020 – Swim with rays in the Caribbean
You’re never far from the water on a tall ship sailing with just four decks, gang planks leading straight down to zodiacs and tenders and a drop down Marina Deck at the stern of Royal Clipper. Complimentary water sports are included with all sailings, and snorkelling masks and flippers are offered to all guests. Swim with teeming colourful fish or take an optional guided snorkelling excursion to snorkel with rays and other marine life during a relaxed and idyllic sailing through some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and unspoilt islands, dropping anchor and harbouring in ports and bays inaccessible to large cruise ships. APRIL 2020 – voyage trans-Atlantic
Twice a year Star Clipper’s majestic tall ships make the voyage between Europe and the Caribbean, taking just over two weeks to make the crossing. Without the distractions of regular port calls guests can savour long days with just the sea, the sky and the workings of the ship, relaxing far from the stress of the world. Daytime activities include lectures and presentations about the ships, the chance to climb 45’ to the first crow’s nest for a true birds-eye view of the ocean and the decks, knot-tying, rope pulling and learning navigational skills. At night unpolluted skies in the midst of the ocean give clear views of the constellations, enabling guests to star gaze from the teak decks and sleep with the sound of the ocean lapping the flanks of the ship and the wind in the sails. MAY 2020 – new Borneo fly-stay-cruise
The world’s third largest island, Borneo, is an exciting new destination for Star Clippers. Known for its beaches and ancient, biodiverse rainforest, Borneo is home to many cultures, cuisines and exotic wildlife, including orangutan, clouded leopards and the Irrawaddy dolphin. JUNE 2020 – visit the birthplace of the Olympic Games
The next Olympics take place in Tokyo in summer 2020, a far cry from the first Games held in Olympia, Peloponnese, in 776BC to honour the ancient Greek god Zeus. Olympia’s extensive ruins include a stadium, athletic training areas, temples dedicated to Zeus and his sister-wife Hera while exhibits and finds from the site can be found in the Archaelogical Museum of Olympia. Sailing was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1896, and departing from Athens on 13th June 2020 Star Flyer’s guests can combine the thrill of sail with a port call into the Peloppenese and an optional visit to take in the history of the Olympiads. JULY 2020 – climb the rigging of a tall ship
Maintaining the rigging and the sails and keeping a watch from the crow’s nest were a daily part of the perilous roles of sailors of the 19th and early 20th centuries as cargo ships traversed the oceans under wind and sail. Today, guests on board the three historically styled tall ships in Star Clippers’ fleet can experience a more genteel, but still adrenalin raising version of climbing the rigging to the first crow’s nest, 67’ above the teak decks. Under the watchful eye of the ships’ sports crew and harnessed safely to the rigging, guests from 8 to 80 have made the breath-taking climb to this exceptional vantage point to give spectacular views of the sails, the decks, the sea and the sky. AUGUST 2020 – Canals, fjords, castles and islands
Royal Clipper makes one of her most dramatic sailaways on August 15th, when she sails from Venice for a 7 night Adriatic cruise, giving a spectacular view of the city from the upper decks. Continuing the theme of spectacular scenery, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian architecture and magical port calls, the sailing continues down the Croatian coastline, calling into Rovinj, Zadar, Hvar, Dubrovnik and Korcula and making a port call to Kotor, via the deep and dramatic Bay of Kotor, the deepest fjord in southern Europe. Be on deck of one of the most head-turning ships to transit the 105 year old 48 mile long Panama Canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, sailing through this spectacular man-made channel 26m (85’) above sea level. With their towering masts and sleek lines Star Flyer and Royal Clipper always turn heads as the ships navigate the lock systems and the alongside other private craft, naval and cargo vessels, taking this 8000 mile `short cut’ around South America to pass between the north Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean sea.
